Research

Research is at the core of HAP’s mission, along with preservation and dissemination.

There are over one million persons of Greek ancestry in the United States and New York is home to the largest Greek population outside Greece and Cyprus. HAP analyzes quantitative data from the U.S. Census, the American Community Survey, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) to better understand the Greek American population. Demographic characteristics such as average family size, language spoken, and income provide valuable insight on ethnic attachment, residential patterns, and social mobility. Promoting an understanding of the Greek American community builds bridges to the experiences of other immigrant communities and diasporas of Queens, the most diverse among highly populated counties in the U.S. and the most linguistically diverse place in the world.
