Archives

The Hellenic American Project (HAP) Archives is an archival institution for the history of ethnic communities, with a particular emphasis on the history of Greek Americans. Holding a comprehensive collection of archives relating to Greek American community history, HAP aims to enrich historical, cultural, and social awareness as well as the collective memory of ethnic groups. For collections that contain fragile originals and prototypes, HAP ensures preservation through its partnership with Queens College’s Benjamin S. Rosenthal Library, Special Collections.
Apostolis Zoupaniotis, Greek Collegiate Student Association

Apostolis Zoupaniotis is the editor-in-chief and publisher of the Greek American newspaper Greek News and an active member of the Greek American community for over thirty years. The archive donated to the Hellenic American Project, Department of Sociology, Queens College, CUNY is comprised of material that pertains to Greek Collegiate Student Associations of CUNY colleges. As material is catalogued and digitized it will be available on the website.

Dan Georgakas, personal archive

Dan Georgakas is a historian, writer, activist, and longtime editor of Cineaste magazine. He specializes in oral history and the American labor movement. The personal archive donated to the Hellenic American Project, Department of Sociology, Queens College, CUNY is comprised of books, pamphlets, and personal correspondence related to the role of Greek Americans in various sectors of employment and labor movements in the United States. As material is catalogued and digitized it will be available on the website.

Emmanuel Cassotis, multi-media personal archive

Emmanuel Cassotis is a first generation immigrant and an active member of the Greek American community for over thirty years. In this time, he has collected materials that pertain to cultural societies and their role in forming community, creating bridges to mainland Greece, and developing ethnic identity. The personal archive donated to the Hellenic American Project, Department of Sociology, Queens College, CUNY is comprised of an assortment of ethnic newspapers and magazines, digital photographs, written material, and books related to the Greek American community. As material is catalogued and digitized it will be available on the website.

Fondas Ladis, multi-media personal archive

Fondas Ladis has worked as a journalist for newspapers and periodicals in Greece and abroad. He has written novels, children’s literature, travel books, political and historical essays, and poetry. His lyrics have been set to music by Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Loizos, as well as many other Greek composers. The personal archive donated to the Hellenic American Project, Department of Sociology, Queens College, CUNY is comprised of an assortment of books including rare books and first editions, newspapers, periodicals, photographs, and written material related to Greek immigration and the Hellenic diaspora around the world. As material is catalogued and digitized it will be available on the website.

Newspapers & Periodicals:
Greek News: a progressive and democratic Greek American Bilingual Weekly Newspaper electronic archive 2003-2021

The newspaper’s mission was to featuring current events in the United States, Greece, Cyprus, and news about the Greek American community.

Greek News, was established in Astoria, New York, and it had a wide circulation in the Tri – State Area; its founder and publisher was Mr. Apostolos Zoupaniotis.  Catalogued material is available on the JStor Platform of Queens College’s Library, Special Collections & Archives.  Link: https://www.jstor.org/site/queenscollegearchives/greeknews

Lambros Papandoniou, multi-media personal archive

Lambros Papantoniou served as correspondent for the Greek daily newspaper Eleftheros Typos, Radio Thessaloniki, and the Greek American weekly newspaper Greek News, at the White House, the Department of State, and the Pentagon. As material is catalogued and digitized it will be available on the website.

The Ellis Island Oral History Program, interview transcripts

The Ellis Island Oral History Program, based at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, is the oldest and largest oral history project dedicated to preserving the first-hand recollections of immigrants coming to America during the years Ellis Island was in operation: 1892-1954. Each interview includes an extensive examination of everyday life in the country of origin, family history, reasons for coming to America, the journey to the port, experiences on the ship, arrival and processing at the Ellis Island facility and an in-depth look at the adjustment to living in the United States. Each person interviewed receives a tape of the interview and interviews become available as tapes and transcripts to researchers and interested members of the public. Currently, the Program is managed by George Tselos, the Supervisory Archivist and Head of Reference Services. Twenty-eight interview transcripts have been made available to the Hellenic American Project, Department of Sociology, Queens College, CUNY.

The Metropolitan Greek Chorale, multi-media archive

The Metropolitan Greek Chorale was established in 1965 in New York City, the Chorale is comprised of an all-volunteer membership from Greek communities and their friends in the greater metropolitan area. Since its 1968 concert debut at Town Hall, the Chorale has performed at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, and other major concert halls in the United States. The Metropolitan Greek Chorale has donated mixed media including: sheet music, concert programs, concert posters, videos, and photographs to the Hellenic American Project, Department of Sociology, Queens College, CUNY. As material is catalogued and digitized it will be available on the website.

Vincent Giordano, multi-media archive

The Vincent Giordano multi-media archive donated to the Hellenic American Project, Department of Sociology and Special Collections at the Library of Queens College, CUNY is comprised of an assortment of written material, prints and slides, photographic negatives, audio cassettes and other recordings related to Giordano’s more than decade-long documentation of the Greek-Jewish community of Kehila Kedosha Janina in the New York and the synagogue and community in Ioannina, Greece. As material is catalogued and digitized it will be available on the website.
